Literacy and Numeracy

Why developing literacy and numeracy matters

Developing literacy and numeracy skills across the curriculum is essential for students' overall education and personal development. It not only equips them with the necessary tools to succeed academically but also empowers them, boosts their self-esteem, improves their mental well-being, and promotes positive behaviour. Additionally, strong literacy and numeracy skills enable students to actively participate in society once they leave NSG.

Literacy

At NSG, our aim is to foster a culture of reading for pleasure. The goal is to instil a genuine love of reading in students. This involves removing any barriers that may hinder their reading experience, providing access to a wide variety of books, and cultivating enthusiasm for reading among students. It is also important to demonstrate to students that adults share their passion for reading by acting as a reading role model, as this can be a powerful motivator. Encouraging parents and caregivers to support their children's reading at home is another important aspect of promoting a reading culture.

Furthermore, fostering confident speaking and listening skills is crucial. Students should be able to effectively communicate their ideas, engage in discussions, and use speech as a means of enhancing their learning. Creating an environment where students in need of additional support can receive the necessary assistance is vital. Every student should have the opportunity to expand their vocabulary, take pride in their writing, write clearly and accurately, and adapt their language and writing style to suit different contexts.

By prioritising literacy development across all subjects, students will not only acquire subject-specific knowledge but also enhance their overall literacy skills. This integrated approach to literacy education ensures that students are well-prepared for their future endeavours and can actively contribute to society.

Numeracy

Strong numeracy skills are equally vital for students as they progress through secondary school and prepare for adult life. Numeracy extends beyond the ability to perform basic calculations; it encompasses problem-solving, logical reasoning, and critical thinking—skills that are fundamental across all areas of learning and essential in real-life contexts. With a solid foundation in numeracy, students can confidently tackle mathematical challenges in subjects like science, geography, and economics, enhancing their understanding and performance across the curriculum.

Numeracy proficiency is also essential for students' future financial literacy and economic independence. Understanding and managing numbers enables students to make informed decisions regarding budgeting, saving, and investing, which are crucial for personal financial well-being. Moreover, numeracy skills empower students to participate fully in an increasingly data-driven world, where interpreting graphs, statistics, and trends is part of everyday life.

At NSG, we aim to integrate numeracy development across subjects, ensuring that students are not only equipped with mathematical knowledge but are also able to apply these skills in practical ways. This holistic approach to numeracy reinforces students' confidence, prepares them for diverse career paths, and enhances their ability to make informed, thoughtful contributions to society.
